Lab 13 – Energy Sources Purpose Students will consider the sources of energy used in daily life. Theory Total global use of electricity is on the order of 2 PW (petawatts). A watt is a joule per second. A joule is roughly enough energy to lift a brick 10 cm. So think of this as two quadrillion bricks being thusly lifted per second. The total global use of other forms of power (vehicle fuel, burned lumber, wind mills pumping water for cows) is perhaps ten times greater still. People use a lot of power! The major sources are fossil (oil, gas, coal), hydro (dams), nuclear, renewables (biomass, solar, wind), and geothermal (geysers). They don’t all share equal energy density, however. A typical ton of coal contains as much energy as 2.4 cubic feet of natural gas, or 200 gallons of gasoline, or as a whole football field of solar panels collects in two sunny days. They also don’t all share the same set of drawbacks. Most renewables are low output, intermittent, and require rare minerals for which the third world is being strip-mined. Nuclear is perfect for energy density, but the wastes are horrific and have to be stored for eons. Fossil fuels will eventually run out, and produce a lot of CO2 that could perhaps be caught and put to good use. Nearly every suitable river for hydroelectric already has a dam on it, and there are environmental consequences. In short, there are no free lunches. Futuristic sources aren’t too likely to change the world any time soon. All attempts at fusion power have thus far fallen short of producing more power than they consume. Thorium reactors are far safer and less toxic than their uranium-based relatives, but there will still be bad isotopes to get rid of. Tidal generators are weak and break down. Lightning is hard to catch, plus battery technology is grotesquely polluting. Smart people are very desperately needed to figure all this out. Very few people are willing to severely diminish their energy consumption. It’s hard to find a developing nation that doesn’t want better access to energy. The good news is that humanity solves problems best when its back is against the wall. Procedure 1. Go look up where your electricity is coming from.
