Life Hack #4 Options
Practice a Go-To Question (to solicit feedback): A practice of Radical Candor is asking for candid criticism. To do this, Scott recommends having a Go-To Question that demands a response other than “yes” or “no,” like, “Is there anything I could do or stop doing that would make it easier to work with me?”, “Give me some advice.”, “What’s bothering you?”, “What’s the one thing you’ve been wanting to tell me but have been holding back?” or any other question that elicits feedback that feels natural to you. The Go-To Question can make things awkward, at first. In order to get comfortable embracing discomfort, you have to practice it — which means you need to put yourself in a place where you feel safe being a little bit uncomfortable. Work with a friend, colleague or family member to practice your Go-To Question. After you ask it, count to seven to wait for their feedback. Make sure to thank them for their honesty and willingness to share with you! Start your response with the words “Thank you, because… ”
Listening with Intent. Choose one:
At your next work or club meeting/group project/family or roommate dinner, respond to others by first summarizing what they just said to you before you begin your response.
When you enter a conversation, listen as if you are wrong. Replace blame with curiosity.
In conversation, allow for some silence in the room. Really think about what someone has just said, versus what you want to say, before you respond.
Find a partner to practice with (co-worker, classmate, friend, family member). Have one person speak for three minutes uninterrupted while you listen. You can nod, or say, “I understand,” but this is not the time for questions, or for you to relate their story to something you care about, like your favorite summer vacation story, or to give the speaker that one tip that’s going to forever change their life…Your job is not to give advice, it’s to listen.
Caring Personally: For this week, keep a journal to appreciate three different people each day. Making gratitude a habit will engender warmth and set the stage for more caring and candid conversations.
Give Praise: Praise, like criticism, includes caring and a challenge. To ensure both of these happen and give sincere, meaningful praise, make sure your praise includes:
Context – What’s the context for the feedback?
Observation (Describe what was said or done.)
Result (what is the consequence that is most meaningful – to you and to them
Next (what steps will you take next?)
For example: “I’ve been really busy studying for midterms lately (context) and I noticed you’ve done most of the dishes this week (observation), this really allowed me to focus on my studies and not stress while being home (result). I’ll make sure to pull my weight again this week (next).”
