Always check with your instructors to see if their requirements differ from those described here. QUOTATIONS If a direct quotation is less than 40 words, use quota-tion marks: Svendsen (2013) advises that “it is important that readers know when you are borrowing someone else’s exact words” (p. 1). If a direct quotation is 40 words or more, format it as a block quotation: Svendsen (2013) explains: It is important that readers know when you are borrowing someone else’s exact words. Otherwise, you may be ac-cused of plagiarism, which is a form of theft. Students found guilty of plagiarism will be subject to disciplinary action, including possible expulsion from the University. Mini Case – 12 Principle-Based Tips for Case Analysis So, how do I distinguish the strongest students. What makes an A+ answer? 1. Did you understand what the question is asking for? How are you showing this? 2. Did you identify the correct, applicable theory? 3. Did you define the theory? 4. Did you explain the theory? (Part of the explanation is demonstrating you understand it. Providing a definition is a good way to begin this analysis). 5. Were there sub-theories that needed to be identified and explained as well? 6. Did you provide all the case examples that were available? “All” means every example you can find in the case. 7. Did you connect the case examples to the theory in a way to demonstrate your understanding and further your analysis? If you couldn’t find an example from the case, is there another idea or example that you added about the type of business or industry that makes sense that again furthers your analysis. 8. Have you stated your assumptions or made any inferences from the case that also demonstrates your understanding? An inference may be something not specifically mentioned in the case, but you could likely reasonably conclude. 9. If there is an opposite theory, an opposing theory, or a wrong theory – is there a way to show why this one is wrong and why your theory chosen is the correct one. (This type of comparison is not always necessary, but in some cases, may allow a deeper, more thoughtful analysis in certain examples, where perhaps choosing a side is harder, more complex, or the correct answer is not very clear. Lawyers do this all the time in court cases. They also prove why the ‘other argument’ [the other side] is wrong). 10. Is what you have presented strong, solid, detailed, thorough etc? 11. Does your answer mirror or look exactly like the answer key? How is it the same? How is it different? What did you miss or forget? What did you do differently that may make your answer even better than the answer key that shows a deep level of knowledge and understanding? 12. Does your answer demonstrate excellence? Could you take your answer and present it to the class as a complete, full answer key? Could your answer be used as a template, resource, or reference to mark other student papers and answers?
