– Oskar Schlemmer,画家、雕塑家、设计师和编舞家
Triadic ballet, 1922 (Choreography Oskar Schlemmer / Music Paul Hindemith) Triadisches Ballett (Triadic Ballet) is a widely performed avant-garde artistic dance. Inspired by Schlemmer’s observations during the First World War and by Arnold Schoenberg’s atonal melodrama Pierrot lunaire, it has 3 acts, 3 participants, 12 dances, and 18 costumes. Each act is assigned a different colour. The first three scenes, against a 6 yellow background, express a cheerful, burlesque mood. The two middle scenes, on a pink stage, are festive and solemn. The final three scenes, on black, are designed to be mystical and fantastic

1. Describe WHAT happens in the dancer’s performance. What is the dancer wearing?
About the costume, ask yourself what it is accenting, reflecting or revealing?
Is the dancer manipulating any prop? Describe the type of movement (running, jumping, sliding, reaching, falling, swaying, etc.). How does the dancer use her arms?
Is she mostly on the floor or air?
2. Describe WHAT happens in the music: Duration is about time (long/short). It can refer to the length of individual notes, beat and pulse, rhythmic patterns. Dynamics is about volume (loud/soft). It can refer to the volume of individual notes, changes in volume (sudden block dynamics and gradual crescendo, decrescendo), accented notes. Structure is about sections of the music. Here it refers to repetition, variety, contrast, development or unification. Texture is about density. For this piece, it refers to the number of instruments, and to the way an instrument’s tone affects its timbre (distorted vs clean guitar)
3, Analyze HOW the dance happens. Is the pacing (tempo) fast or slow? Do the music and movement relate closely or is it a looser relationship? Is the music the driving force of the piece? Are the dancer’s movements large or small? Does the dancer create pathways on the floor or is she mostly performing in place? Are the movements jagged or flowing, curvy or straight? Describe whether there are changes in energy. What is unique and what is familiar in the piece?
YOUR reaction: how do you react to the dance? Be throughtful and constructive
thank you !
