1 WORLDVIEWS AND ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES: A DIGITAL MAGAZINE – Due by Thursday, November 18th. Bring a color print out of your magazine page to class that day. You must be in class that day to present these to your peers!
This project is to create a single page contribution to an open-access DIGITAL MAGAZINE and a single page reflection. For the former, pretend that you are each writes for a magazine on worldviews and environmental values, covering different philosophical topics of interest. The audience for this magazine is college educated, so you want to have sufficiently complex detail, but also be clear to understand. You want to approach this as though you are writing an opinion and news piece that both offers a detailed account of a particular philosophical issue/perspective/theme/topic drawn from class, and offers your own take on that issue’s significance and relevance. Just to get you brainstorming, below is a list of topics and ideas we’ve discussed in the readings and in class. At the end, these will be compiled into a magazine on Calameo and the link sent around to the class. For examples from another class, see the end of the attached pdf.
One way to get started would be to consider your favorite topic, philosophical problem, worldview, environmental issue, or reading (though I better not get 25 of these all on Kimmerer’s skywoman falling story, which I know was a favorite for many). A list of some of the things we’ve talked about so far is included below. You can write on just one of these ideas and authors, or combine some. Here are some examples of that: bring together Kimmerer’s stuff on communication and translation with the orca readings or with Wadiwel’s discussion of how we can see resistance by tracking power. Draw de la Cadena’s stuff on Indigenous politics bringing in non-human agents together with Hiller and Silva’s piece on Native Hawaiian’s political relations with sharks and pigs; or look at how toxity is used in the environmental justice movement and compare it with challenges from Claire’s “Brilliant Imperfections,” etc. Feel free to build on/answer one of your questions for consideration, but you must revise it based on what was discussed about that reading in class and what we’ve spoken of since, maturing it based on the way the course developed since). The grading rubric for this project can be found on the following page. The requirements are:
2 This assignment is a reflection on your magazine spread. Tell me why you chose the idea you did, what makes that topic the most significant, meaningful, scary, interesting, etc for you.
